What Are We Working on for Web Help Desk (WHD) - Updated March 14, 2017
To receive updates on the WHD roadmap, JOIN thwack and BOOKMARK this page
We are currently in the planning phase for the next release, we are investigating following areas. As we move forward we will update this post to reflect what we are working on short-term. If there is anything missing or arguments to move things up, vote on product ideas or post a comment.
Web Help Desk is an important product in the SolarWinds portfolio. We have an engineering team dedicated to making improvements, adding features and fixing bugs.
As a mature product that satisfies the needs of most customers, the release cycle for this product will likely be slower than that of other products who are more quickly evolving. Our release cycles might be anywhere between 9 to 18 months depending on the number and complexity of the releases being added. SolarWinds is committed to Web Help Desk and will continue to improve it.
Here is a preview of some the features we are working on post v12.5;
- Unexpected Simplicity
- In product efficiency enhancements focusing on Assets, Ticketing, Reservations, PO
- Reservation capabilities within a ticket
- Drag and Drop functionality within Tickets and FAQ - Based on this Idea in Thwack
- Asset / PO Workflow Enhancement - Based on Feedback
- Enhanced Search
- Spotlight Searches within Modules - Example Adding a "General" Form Search box within Assets
- In product efficiency enhancements focusing on Assets, Ticketing, Reservations, PO
- Application-Centric
- Multi-Tech per Ticket
- Parent / Child Time - Tracking
- Bar-code - Asset Management
- Asset UI Re-Work - Next Gen UI (as recently performed on Dashboards)
- IOS Application updates - More to come on this as we progress through iterations but first task is to update to run on IOS 10
- Officially Building support for Office 365 - Many are using the MS-Exchange connector we had built for previous exchange versions and we are building in O365 support
- AWS/Azure/Docker - Market place packaging making it easier to stand up in the cloud.
IPAM 4.3 and UDT 3.2 Beta available for download!
We know many of you have both IPAM and UDT products and thus I'm glad to announce even better integration of these two products. The connecting point is IP Address conflict detection. For successful troubleshooting of IP Address conflict, you need two things:
1) detect MAC addresses and type of devices in a conflict (static, DHCP, overlaping scopes)
2) understand how are devices physically connected (who connected first, is it WiFi or Ethernet connection, what's the port).
IPAM and UDT have all the information you need to understand who is the origin user of IP address and who is causing the conflict. Plus, you can shut down port from web console if needed.
Here is how you may try our beta functionality and give us your feedback:
2) Instal IPAM & UDT bundle on NON production environment (can be a virtual machine either)
3) Let IPAM to scan your network and detect conflict.
4) If conflict(s) was detected you may see new visuals on IPAM Summary page:
5) Click on IP Address and it find the details about history of IP address connections and ports:
In a case you have installed IPAM without UDT, you will see new UI without port information.
If you do not see information you need, something is missing or conflict is not detected as expected, please, let us know via this forum. Thanks again for your help with this beta.
DNS mismatch, IPv6 actiev polling, MAC vendor identification and PTR records automation in 4.2 beta 1
Another IPAM beta is out, with new features that are waiting for your feedback: DNS mismatch, automatic PTR records, IPv6 active polling and MAC address identification in IPAM 4.2 Beta 1
thanks all for your previous input which helped us to create all that functionality.
IPAM & UDT integrated - IPAM 4.3 Release Candidate
We just baked new release of IPAM 4.3 , this time focused on those problems which requires information about end-point physical connectivity and history connections. For example what are devices in IP Address conflict and how are they connected? With this info you may connect to associate wireless access point or switch and block one of the end-points.
UDT also integrates better with IPAM in this bundle and can display IP Address information from within port detail page.
IPAM also fixes the formatting issue with PTR records on Windows and uses different (no additional domain name added).
You can download RC version from your customer portal or via this RC program
Automatic Subnet discovery is here - IPAM 4.2 Release Candidate
Are you awaiting new features we've been working on for IPAM 4.2? then I have a great news for you. Our IPAM 4.2 Release Candidate 1 is here and it's literally packed with new functionality. Here comes a quick overview on what's new:
1) Automatic IPv4 subnet discovery.
- No more obsolete information from spreadsheet during import, IPAM scans routing tables and gets your real list of subnets
- Automatic detection of default gateways speeds up your discovery process
- New interactive wizard which will help you organising new subnets from network discovery
- Uses read only & SNMP protocol - supports almost all L3 network devices.
2) Automated MAC -> HW Vendor translation
- Need monthly audit reports? IPAM resolve MAC to Vendor Icon and name automatically.
- Contains over 4500 vendors in up-to date internal database (doesn't need internet connectivity to resolve MAC)
- Looking for a specific device? Search for specific vendor name and IPAM shows you a list of assigned IP addresses
3) Improvements in DHCP and DNS management
- Speed-up your daily routine tasks - PTR records are created automatically with A or AAAA records on your DNS servers, no space for typos and mistakes.
- Problems with server availability? New DNS Mismatch UI that scans your DNS servers and shows you where you have mismatch in forward and revers DNS records
- Running DHCP in split-scope scenarios on multiple servers and want to see top utilised scopes before you run out of free IPs? New UI will tell you where you need to reclaim old IP addresses or re-size your DHCP scope
4) IPAM is now fully IPv6 compatible
- Did you deploy IPv6 networks and devices but you don't have up-to date network map of IPv6 addresses? IPAM has now IPv6 IP Address discovery. It scans routers and their NDS tables for all IPv6 traffic and automatically assign discovered IP Addresses into your IPv6 subnets. You can run it every week or month and keep IPAM updated
- Would you like to see IP address status history, when it went offline or if it uses same MAC address? IPAM now uses ICMP v6 protocol for scanning IP address status and also track MAC addresses in a history list.
Can't wait to see that live on your environment? If you under IPAM active maintenance go to your customer portal and download RC version. It's fully supported and you can install that as an update on your production systems.
You can also help us answer two questions about IPAM and get direct download links from HERE.
IPAM 4.1 RC1 is here! ISC DHCP support and more...
I'm happy to announce that IP Address Manager 4.1 RC1 is available for download and installation on your production servers.
Except bug fixes, there are two new big features we added into this release of IPAM:
- ISC DHCP management and monitoring
- Create, edit or remove ISC DHCP subnets directly in IPAM using the same UI as for Microsoft or Cisco DHCP
- Manage ISC DHCP subnet options, ranges and pools (RFC standard options, including options 66 & 67 for VoIP settings)
- Default alerts for high DHCP subnet utilization
- Monitoring of ISC DHCP shared subnets and their utilization
- Monitoring of availability of ISC DHCP servers and their subnets (up, down, unreachable)
- Monitoring of ISC DHCP IP address static assignments within groups
- Support for management of standard DHCP scope options on Microsoft or Cisco DHCP servers
- Setup VoIP options (66 & 67) on your DHCP scopes
- Manage all RFC standard DHCP options using web UI that describe usage of each option.
- Automatic both-way DHCP scope option sync between IPAM and DHCP servers
The installation is available on your customer portal or via this RC agreement (IPAM 4.1 RC Participation Survey).
You should contact SolarWinds support in case of any problems or bugs you found.
We are looking to your feedback on this latest version.

Will I lose my spot on the leaderboard or my badges if I purchase an item from the store?
No, you will not lose your spot on the leaderboard nor your badges. However, the store will deduct these points from your available balance. For example, if you have 5,000 points and you purchase a laptop sleeve for 2,000 points, your point value will reflect 3,000 but your spot on the leaderboard will not change. In other words, the leaderboard runs off of your lifetime balance and all of your earned badges will stay in your profile.
Is the shipping cost covered?
Yes. There will be no cost to you. However, we must mention that with the initial launch of the store we will only be able to ship to the U.S. and Canada. For international customers, if you have a U.S. or Canada shipping address where you can receive mail, we will gladly fulfill the order and ship to that address.
What countries do you ship to?
United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Germany are currently the only countries we ship to.
My points were deducted, but I don't live in any of the eligible countries for shipping. How can I get my points back?
Please email thwackstore@solarwinds.com for assistance.
How soon will I receive my item?
After your order has been processed and shipped, you should receive your item within 7-10 business days.
How do I purchase an item from the store?
You will begin the purchasing process in a similar way, but will soon see the changes.
You'll be presented with a list of products you're able to purchase. After clicking the
purchase button, the item card rotates and presents a "confirm" button.
After clicking Confirm, you will be presented with a shopping cart dialog. Here, you can
review the items in the cart, checkout, or keep shopping.
A new icon in the header will show you the current number of items in your cart. Clicking
this icon will also bring up the shopping cart dialog. No longer will you lose your order
if you have to step away!
Clicking the Checkout Now button will transition the dialog to a form that allows you to fill
in a new address or select an existing address. *An existing address can only be used if
you already have one listed in your profile.
Once finished, you click on the Complete Order button.
After clicking the Complete Order button, you will then be presented with an Order Complete
dialog that explains what happens next.
Until an order has been confirmed Received by our fulfillment vendor, you will see an order
status icon in the header bar next to your login name. The number next to the icon indicates
the number of open orders.
Clicking this icon will present an Order Status dialog that shows the fulfillment stage the
order is in, along with a link to track the package it has already been shipped.
The last noteworthy thing to mention are the stages of an order. Orders can be in one of three states:
Submitted, Processing or Shipped.

Google Maps in Orion NPM - How to Video
I've made some changes to the original Google Maps that I introduced about this time last year. This version provides a status icon on the map for each unique latitude and longitude value in the database. I'm leaving the old one up as it is better for environments where a large number of sites exist, and would simply be too cluttered with a status icon at each site.
Prerequisites:
1) Obtain Google API Key for Maps v3
2) Create and populate Custom Properties:
- Country
- City
- Latitude
- Longitude
Installation:
Copy files to the c:\inetpub\SolarWinds\Orion\GoogleMap\
Update your connection string and API key
Create a view in NPM using the Custom HTML resource, configure iFrame
See the movie (how to install the mod):
Read the book (asp files, readme, notes on GitHub):

Enjoy!

My Orion Website & Server is very slow what should i check quickly ?
This article provides quick information about your current environment and health check , Further it will help you address the most common reasons of performance issues on to your server without sending the diagnostics to SolarWinds support .
In this article you can also Audit your own environment quickly if its been setup as recommended by the Solarwinds MINIMUM requirements or according to the settings eliminating bottlenecks creating performance issues within the set environment .
This article also help to save time to upload the diagnostics for Support where you have air gap between the server and you can check the basic health check on the actual server itself .
There are lots of other benefits to check the environment health within the internal due to security procedure not allowing uploading the diagnostics for Solarwinds support .
Your check list
✔Server Hardware
✔Total Elements (Nodes /Interfaces/ Volumes) been polled per server
✔SQL Server / Orion DB Size / Settings / Options
✔Webpages Customization
✔Check SQL Server Disk Performance
✔Orion Antivirus directory exclusion
Lets collect System diagnostics as below.
Navigate to Start -> SolarWinds Orion -> Documentation and Support
Launch the gray icon for Orion Diagnostics.> Click "Start"
This program will generate a .zip file as output.
( Unzip in a folder ) Right Click > Select Extract Here .
Server Hardware
Lets check your System Hardware first if this even near to the Solarwinds MINIM recommended.
Go to the SystemInformation folder > Open the SystemInfo.txt file
You will be able to find the System hardware specification below is an example where system is only assigned with 2 Physical CPU Sockets /
below is an example where the system is only assigned two CPU PHYSICAL SOCKETS which is below Solarwinds MINIMUM recommendation .
You must have to have MINIMUM 4 PHYSICAL CPU SOCKETS here .
System Type: x64-based PC
✘Processor(s): 2 Processor(s) Installed.
[01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1600 Mhz
[02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1400 Mhz
Total Physical Memory: 49.082 MB
Available Physical Memory: 39.408 MB
Virtual Memory: Max Size: 56.250 MB
Virtual Memory: Available: 45.376 MB
Virtual Memory: In Use: 10.874 MB
Now open the SysInfo.csv file and check the further current CPU load on the System and CPU GHz level .
Below in an example where the CPU load in around 70% on the current system due to two main reasons .
Parameter | Value |
OSVersion | Windows Server 2012 R2 (Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) |
CPUInformation | Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2420 0 @ 1.90GHz |
CurrentCPUUssage | 70 % |
TotalPhysicalMemmory | 49152 MB |
FreePhysicalMemmory | 39802 MB |
FreeVirtualMemmory | 45843 MB |
FreeSpaceInPagingFiles | 7109 MB |
CurrentTimeZone | xxxx Standard Time (UTC+01:00:00) |
Low Physical Sockets assigned
Low CPU power less then 3.0 GHz
You should be able to see MINIMUM 4 Physical Processors Sockets as below .
System Model: VMware Virtual Platform
System Type: x64-based PC
✔Processor(s): 4 Processor(s) Installed.
[01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz
[02]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz
[03]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz
[04]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3493 Mhz
BIOS Version: Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00, 4/14/2014
Further check how much memory is assinged and available for the system and check the TaskManager which application is consuming high memory .
In above case the System Hardware is not even near to the recommended SolarWinds production deployment therefor the CPU load will remain high therefor System resources.
The following table lists minimum hardware requirements and recommendations for your SolarWinds Orion server.
Installing multiple SolarWindsOrion Platform products on the same computer may change the requirements.
Hardware requirements are listed by SolarWinds NPM license level.
These minimum requirements are for the Orion Platform. Products that run on the Orion Platform may have different requirements, such as different OS or memory requirements.
