NPM 2019.4 IS NOW GENERALLY AVAILABLE!

It is my pleasure to announce that Network Performance Monitor (NPM) 2019.4 is now available and can be downloaded from the Customer Portal.

Note that we've changed the version numbering with this release. This and future releases will follow a "year.quarter" numbering system instead of the previous (12.5) system.

What's New in NPM 2019.4?

  • Device View - Visually display your network switches on Cisco 2960 and Juniper devices to check port status, utilization, and position from the Orion Web Console.
  • Real-time Charts - Display real-time data with new dashboard widgets:
    • CPU Load and Memory Utilization on Node Details.
    • Percent Utilization on Interface Details.
  • Performance Improvements - Check out the improved load times for widgets.
  • Updated Localization - Improved support for German and Japanese languages.
  • Improved Port-type Mapping - Discover port types with more accuracy.

Device View

Device View allows you to see the physical layout of your network switch's interfaces (except management or console) in order to check port status, utilization, and position from the Orion Web Console. It is being released in NPM 2019.4 as a "technical preview", meaning we haven't added enough functionality to deem it a full-fledged feature. In this case, the limiting factor comes in the form of vendor support.

NPM 2019.4 includes Device View support for the majority of switches in the following families (provided they're not in a "stacked" configuration):

  • Cisco Catalyst 2960
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960L
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960S
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960X
  • Cisco Catalyst 2960XR
  • Juniper EX2200
  • Juniper EX3300

In order for Device View to be available in the web console, the supported switch will need to be monitored as an SNMP node.

Once monitored, you'll be able to access the new subview from the Node Details page.

Device View can be filtered using the filter list on the left side of the page. Currently, you can filter the interfaces based on status. Interfaces that do not match the selected filters become opaque.

Device View also provides a side panel with additional interface details. This is not visible by default. To view the side panel, click on any interface in the Device View stencil. The side panel displays the caption of the interface, it's IP address, MAC address, duplex mode, and more.

Real-Time Charts

With NPM 2019.4, we're also releasing our first set of widgets that provide real-time data!

Real-time CPU Load & Memory Usage will now appear by default in the top-right position of the Node DetailsVital Stats page.

Real-time interface Percent Utilization will similarly appear in the top-right position of the Interface DetailsSummary page.

These charts can also be added via the Add Widget panel on other appropriate views.

The Chart Refresh Time update interval for real-time data charts is set to 2 seconds by default. This can be changed in two ways:

  • Via the Web Console Settings page:

  • Via the Advanced Configuration page:

The polling settings are tied to PerfStack, and can be adjusted on the Advanced Configuration page in PerfStack settings.

Improved Port Type Mapping

This feature provides information which can be used for filtering interfaces by port type during the discovery process. The changes we've made are primarily on the backend, but you may notice some minor UI tweaks.

Performance Improvements

NPM 2019.4 includes many improvements to web performance. We think you'll notice a difference in how fast the pages load.

Updated Localization

NPM 2019.4 includes improved support for the Japanese and German languages.

Problem downloading F5 devices configuration ?

Please use build-in NCM device template for F5 devices.

It is called “F5 Big IP”. Before use it you  need to do some pre-configuration on device.

Basically you need to login on device web interface and configure user to login directly into Advanced shell right after connect instead of tmsh as it is right now. Details are there:

https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/Success_Center/NCM/Content/NCM-F5-device-template-behavior.htm

With such configuration it will enabled full NCM support of device and you will be able to even download UCF and SCF configs. and you should not have any further issues with the F5 devices.

Only then the NCM will be able to download the full configuration from the F5 devices and will work without any issues .

Want F5 UCS Binary files to download ?

With NCM 7.5, one may now back up the UCS file for F5 devices as well as other vendors or machines that have binary files and not text. These files are stored in a shared drive and not the database, they do not participants in Real Time Change Detection, Config Change Reporting or Compliance Reporting in NCM. The primary objective was to allow NCM to get the backup of the devices and move them to the config archive folder on the server or wherever it was customized to be.

Back up the F5 UCS file in NCM 7.5 and Higher version other binary files such as .tgz and .tar

Server & Application Monitor (SAM) 2019.4 Is Now Generally Available

$

0

I'm pleased to announce that Server & Application Monitor (SAM) 2019.4 is now available and can be downloaded from Customer Portal and solarwinds.com. In prior releases, SAM 6.9.x brought our AppInsight monitoring capabilities to your on-premises Active Directory environment and added quite a few Microsoft Azure and Office 365 application templates. Version 2019.4 is the next release following SAM 6.9.1 and is compatible with Orion Platform 2019.4.

What's New in SAM 2019.4

SAM 2019.4 release notes

Orion Platform 2019.4 release notes

AppInsight for Active Directory

Active Directory is the backbone application of every business, and as such we knew we wanted to do more. In many customer interviews, a clear theme arose - my company acquired a new company, and we're starting the painful process of merging assets. They need to access our corporate applications immediately. Enter the age old problem of keeping track of your configured domain trusts.

For those of you already monitoring your domain controllers with AppInsight for Active Directory, all that's necessary is to upgrade to SAM 2019.4.

Navigate in your menu to 'Applications' and Click on 'Active Directory'

A new widget to help track the trust relationship between your Trusted and Trusting domains will be at your fingertips.

Hovering over the relationship will show you additional insight into the trust attributes.

API Polling

Long time customers have enjoyed the flexibility of using our out-of-the-box application templates and customer shared application templates to monitor applications using component monitors such as the HTTP and HTTPS monitor. These component monitors among others allowed administrators to check the status of their websites, but over time the complexity of applications have moved the source of monitoring truth into standard defined APIs such as our own SolarWinds Orion SDK, SolarWinds Pingdom API and SolarWinds AppOptics API

Naturally, you can still use the flexibility of the PowerShell component monitor, or other scripting options, but why spend the time to debug a script when you don't have to?

Customers agree and have voted for a component monitor to be added.

SAM API Component Monitor

While this is not a component monitor in the traditional sense, we have begun to build something new.  The new workflow utilizes a new technology stack, a simplifies the design to allow for custom headers and brings some improvements to the tried and true workflow of application templates.

Even if you don't have an API at hand to test it out, you can utilize REST API test endpoints such as the one I've used below.

Try things out by Configuring SAM to monitor what Pingdom monitorsand let us know your thoughts on the new workflow.

Hardware Health for Nutanix Clusters

In 2015, our Nutanix partners detailed a process in which SolarWinds customers could gain visibility into their Nutanix environments using our SolarWinds UnDP solution.

Customers who utilized it wanted more, as evidenced by these THWACK requests and customer interviews.

Nutanix Support Virtual Platform

Add Nutanix to the VMan/SRM views

I'm happy to announce that in this release we have collaborated with the Virtualization Manager product team to deliver a combined technical preview of Nutanix monitoring along with deep visibility into the hardware health of their Nutanix supported hardware platforms

Hardware health for Nutanix appliances are available through the Prism CVMs, and thus are independent of the hypervisor (VMware, Hyper-V or AHV) hosted on the appliance.

After following the steps outlined in: Configuring SAM to monitor Nutanix environments for hardware health the monitored Nutanix host details page will contain the following details.

Upgrade Now from My Orion Deployment

Don't forget that you can upgrade to 2019.4 from your My Orion Deployment page if you're on SAM 6.9. For a refresher - check out how I upgraded my environment from SAM 6.9 to  SAM 6.9.1 - Upgrading from My Orion Deployment

Did You Know...

To get notified every time we add a new "Did You Know?", click on the follow button on the top right of this screen.

  • AppOptics Trigger Trace - One of the more powerful features of AppOptics is Tracing. Distributed transaction tracing can help you understand the performance and behavior of a request. Although the standard AppOptics implementation includes 100 traces per minute, it is still a sampling. While that works great most of the time, there are times you might want to trace a specific request, especially if you are using AppOptics to monitor performance or debug an application while it is in development. No worries, we recently announced a feature called Trigger Trace; working together with trace options, we've made it easy for you to identify specific requests that you want to make sure have a trace. Read More

  • We just released the SolarWinds® AppOptics Dev Edition, a new, free version of AppOptics aimed at helping developers gain visibility into an application's performance during the development cycle to ship code faster with fewer bugs. Read More

  • Announcing comprehensive, real-time Azure availability and performance monitoring. AppOptics now provides in-depth monitoring of Azure Services and applications running on Azure App Service.  Be the first to know about issues with end-to-end visibility across all your Azure environments. Quickly troubleshoot your Azure applications running on a virtual machine (VM) or an Azure App Service. Read More

  • It is now even easier to manage multiple environments in AppOptics. Technically we've always had environment support through the use of global tags and support for custom EC2 tags.  We recently announced some additional capabilities that further simplify managing multiple environments. Instead of needing to change a config file and specify a tag whenever a host or metric belongs in a different environment, simply use the correct token. Read More

  • Now with one click, you can go directly from a trace into the logs associated with that trace. This new feature provides the ability to correlate the log messages from a traced transaction. Connecting the dots between the distributed trace and the related logs makes your life easier when troubleshooting application issues. Read More

  • You can monitor AWS App Mesh with AppOpticsGaining insight and control over their service-to-service communication is a non-trivial problem. Conceptually operating at layer 5, service meshes offer a major advantage in providing a holistic framework to enhance observability, security, and control of your application flows without having to change any application code. They are also described as a decoupling of developers and operators from their interdependence in affecting service behavior. Read More

  • AppOptics has a triple threat for troubleshooting. The product team is always looking at ways to improve, and that has resulted in the triple threat of troubleshooting–three powerful ways AppOptics helps you get to the root cause of performance problems (distributed tracing, live code profiling, and exception tracking). When all three are combined, you’ve got what you need to quickly and accurately identifying what is causing your applications’ poor performance Read More

  • You can monitor Kubernetes with AppOptics. Custom resource SWQL/SQL extraction (sql)

$

There was a situation where I needed to extract the swql/sql from pages which didn't load.

It look a bit of doing, but it was a simple matter of searching for the name of the view/resource and dump the data.

I tried to do in SWQL, but could find the "ResourceProperties" in SWQL.

SELECT v.ViewGroupName, v.ViewTitle

,r.ResourceTitle, rp.PropertyName, rp.PropertyValue

  FROMViews v

  join Resources r on r.ViewID = v.ViewID

  join ResourceProperties rp on rp.ResourceID=r.ResourceID

  where rp.PropertyName in('sql','swql')and ViewGroupName like'%LookAtMe%'

  --where rp.PropertyName in('sql','swql') and r.ResourceTitle like '%Cleanup%'

This is just something useful to have in the toolbox.

How change logo for main sesion loging page Orion SolarWinds

$
0
0

Hello thwack team. I would like share this information.

Actually we have knowledge base about how to change logo for SolarWinds but this only is for the logo on the upper left corner, as follow

if you whan to do it this KB its work:

Change the Orion Web Console logo in the Orion Platform

But in this occation we will change this logo on the main loggin page (I didn't find KB about this):

To do that we need a imagen in .svg format, if you dont know how to obtain this file you can use Inkscape program or any other program to do it. (youtube tutorial!!!)

Create two files with the names: SolarWinds-Logo.svg and SW-logo.svg

And copy it on the path of the main poller server: C:\inetpub\SolarWinds\Orion\images\Login and reemplace it this files (create a backup for old files)

After that go to your web page SolarWinds of session login and the logo should change

I don't know if when executing a wizar it will change to its original state, if so, we only need to change the files again until SolaWInds allow to do it from some configuration section

Remember to consider backup or snapshot options as a best practice before any changes. I hope it works for you

Alan Martinez

Orion

(Out)

(Out)

[Orion

NCM Unlicensed Nodes by Vendor

To all,

I've created a query to list nodes which aren't NCM licensed by Vendor. I have a huge environment with a lot of network discovery, so I'm not the one cleaning up the results. Therefore I want to enable people to quantify when nodes are added that aren't in NCM.

Add this to a report or to a custom query widget.

--Query to filter NCM unlicensed nodes based on vendor criteria
SELECT CN.OrionNode.Vendor
, CN.OrionNode.Caption --node name from OrionNode table
--commented  , CN.OrionNode.CustomProperties.Region
--remove the "--commented" part to filter by a custom property named Region and/or define your own
FROM Cirrus.NCMNodeLicenseStatus CN --create a name to identify this table (CN)
WHERE LicensedByNCM = 'No'  AND
(CN.OrionNode.Vendor LIKE 'Cisco'
Or CN.OrionNode.Vendor LIKE 'Palo%'
OR CN.OrionNode.Vendor LIKE 'Brocade%'
OR CN.OrionNode.Vendor LIKE 'Riverbed%'
OR CN.OrionNode.Vendor LIKE 'Citrix%')

So I added a custom property just so you can list one if you feel is appropriate alongside this as an index. I want to specifically highlight LicensedByNCM = No. Not LicensedByNCM != Yes, because then you'll pick up nodes with a "never" status.
